Voytzek

By Georg Buchner

This is an unfinished German play written at the beginning of the 19th century and published only about a hundred years later. Buchner wrote only two and a half plays, Voytzek being the half. It is the story of a poor, handicapped soldier who has nothing except his wife and his one-year-old son. His days are spent running from one officer to another providing various services – cutting hair, shaving, etc. For additional pay he agrees to participate in an experiment conducted by a crazy doctor who feeds Voytzek nothing but peas for many days in a row. His wife is unfaithful to him, and when he discovers this, he kills her. The same people who drove him to murder then indict and execute him.

Premiere: February 2006, the Tmuna theater
